Chilla Safari Zone
Chilla is Rajaji's flagship zone and the closest to Haridwar, just 8 km away. It covers the largest core tiger habitat in the reserve and records the highest tiger and elephant sighting rates of all six zones. The Ganga river forms its eastern boundary, drawing wildlife to its banks year-round.
Chilla is also the only zone offering an elephant safari, reintroduced in December 2025 after a seven-year gap. If tigers and elephants are your priority, this is the zone to book first - and the one that fills up fastest in peak season.
Motichur Safari Zone
Motichur sits 9 km from Haridwar directly on the Haridwar-Rishikesh highway, making it the easiest zone to reach. It was one of the three original sanctuaries merged to form Rajaji National Park, and its dense Sal forest is a reliable elephant corridor.
With a shorter 24 km route and gentler terrain than Chilla, Motichur is the zone most naturalists recommend for families and first-time safari-goers, without giving up strong wildlife sighting odds.
Ranipur Safari Zone
Ranipur's rocky, undulating Shivalik terrain is textbook leopard habitat, and the zone records the highest leopard sighting rate in Rajaji National Park. The rugged landscape also supports spotted deer, sambhar, nilgai, barking deer, and a range of owls and raptors.
Fewer visitors choose Ranipur than Chilla, so the forest here feels quieter - a good pick for photographers who want a less crowded route with a genuine shot at a leopard sighting.
Mohand Safari Zone
Mohand lies on the Dehradun-Saharanpur road, just 12 km from Rishikesh, making it the most convenient zone for guests based in Rishikesh or Dehradun. Its more open terrain is one of North India's finest birdwatching stretches, with 200+ recorded species.
The mix of open grassland and forest edge also makes Mohand a favourite among wildlife photographers, who get clearer sightlines here than in the denser Chilla or Motichur forests.
Jhilmil Safari Zone
Jhilmil Jheel is Rajaji's only wetland conservation zone and the last remaining habitat in Uttarakhand for the endangered Barasingha (swamp deer). This buffer-zone wetland also draws migratory birds, making it a dual draw for deer and bird sightings.
Sightings here are best at early morning or late afternoon, when the swamp deer graze at the water's edge and migratory flocks are most active. It's a quieter, more specialised zone than Chilla or Motichur.
Gohri Safari Zone
Gohri Range is the only zone in Rajaji National Park that stays open through the monsoon, while the other five zones close from mid-June to mid-November. Located near Kotdwar on the Song River in Pauri Garhwal district, it offers tigers, elephants, and diverse birdlife in a far less-visited setting.
If your travel dates fall outside the November-June window, Gohri is your only Rajaji safari option - and its low visitor footprint makes it a rewarding choice even in peak season.
