Rajaji National Park spreads over about 820 sq km in the Shivalik foothills and was merged from the Rajaji, Motichur and Chilla sanctuaries in 1983. It became a Tiger Reserve in 2015, and the wider reserve now covers about 1,075 sq km. A jeep is the best way to cover this much ground, with tracks of roughly 25 to 36 km depending on the zone.
Your jeep is allotted by the forest department, and a trained guide rides along. You drive through sal forest, dry riverbeds and grassland, stopping where elephants, deer or birds are active. The park is best known for Asian elephants, and it also holds leopards, sloth bears, spotted deer, sambar and 300+ bird species.
Because Rajaji sits within an hour of Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun, it works as a half-day trip or as part of a longer safari package with stay.

Jeep safari in Rajaji National Park booking is simple if you plan around slots, which fill quickly in winter and in March to May.
Pick morning or afternoon and a zone that suits where you are staying (see the zone table below).
Share full names, ages and a valid photo ID for every guest. Foreign nationals need passport details.
We check the forest department quota, confirm the jeep and send your booking details.
Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early with original IDs. Entry formalities are completed at the gate.
Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead for weekends, winter holidays and March to May. We are an independent booking and information service, not the official government website. Permits, fees and timings are set by the Uttarakhand Forest Department.
The jeep is charged per vehicle, not per person, so a full jeep brings the per-head cost down.

Not sure which to pick? Read our comparison of Chilla vs Motichur.
Rishikesh has no gate of its own. Chilla gate is about 20 - 25 km away, around 40 - 60 minutes by road, so book the Chilla zone and leave early for the morning shift.
Haridwar is the closest base. Chilla gate is about 8 - 10 km from the station, and Motichur, Ranipur and Jhilmil are also on the Haridwar side.
Mohand is the nearest zone, and Motichur lies on the Dehradun-Haridwar highway. Chilla is about 55 km from Dehradun and about 40 km from Jolly Grant Airport.

Rajaji is elephant country. Herds are the most reliable sighting, especially near water in summer. You may also see spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, langur, peafowl and, with luck, a leopard or sloth bear. Tigers live here but are rarely seen, so treat one as a bonus rather than a promise.
Birders get 300+ species, from hornbills and kingfishers to raptors, with winter migrants adding to the list. See the full flora and fauna guide.
| Months | Conditions | Highlights |
