Which zone is best for leopards in Rajaji?
Safari operators and zone guides most often name Ranipur as the best zone for leopards, followed by Motichur. Both are on the Haridwar side of the reserve. On the Dehradun side, Mohand (Chillawali) is also described as a leopard zone, while Ramgarh has far less published information. These are operator and guide reports rather than Forest Department sighting data, so treat them as good odds, not promises.
Leopard zones at a glance
| Zone | Base town | Approx. track | Terrain | Leopard potential |
| Ranipur | Haridwar | About 25 km | Rocky, hilly, small grasslands | Most often recommended |
| Motichur | Haridwar (about 9 km) | About 24-25 km | Dense Sal forest | Good; sightings in bushes reported |
| Mohand (Chillawali) | Dehradun | Confirm at booking | Forest and grass | Reported; quieter zone |
| Ramgarh | Dehradun | Confirm at booking | Confirm | Limited information; verify first |
| Chilla | Haridwar (about 10 km) | About 36 km | Sal forest and open grassland | Possible; better known for elephants |
Ranipur zone
Ranipur is surrounded by small hills and grassland patches, and its rocky ground gives leopards vantage points and cover. Along with leopards, visitors commonly report spotted deer, sambar, nilgai and barking deer, which are natural prey. Reports say sightings here reward patience more than luck, so let your guide stop and wait at likely spots instead of rushing to cover distance.
Motichur zone
Motichur lies close to Haridwar on the Haridwar-Rishikesh road and is a dense Sal forest. Leopards are sometimes seen sitting inside the bushes, and the same forest attracts small elephant herds, woodpeckers, hornbills and barbets. It is also the easiest leopard-friendly zone to add to a short trip.
Mohand and Ramgarh on the Dehradun side
If you are based in Dehradun, Mohand (Chillawali) is the practical choice. It sees less traffic than Chilla, which some visitors prefer. Ramgarh is listed by several operators as a Dehradun-side zone, but published leopard information is thin, so ask your safari planner about current access and recent sightings before you choose it.
How to improve your leopard odds
- Book the first morning slot; leopards are most active in cool early light.
- Choose Ranipur or Motichur, and add a second safari in the other one.
- Go with an experienced guide who knows the alarm calls of deer and langur.
- Stay quiet, switch off phone sounds and avoid wearing bright colours.
- Look at rocks, fallen logs, dry riverbeds and shaded bushes, not only the track.
- Be flexible: a fresh alarm call is worth a ten-minute wait.
Best season for leopards
| Season | Why it works | What to watch |
| November to February | Cool days, good morning activity | Fog can reduce visibility early |
| March to April | Comfortable weather, thinning cover | Weekends can be busy |
| May to mid-June | Animals move toward water and forest is open | Heat; choose the first slot |
Honest expectations
Leopards are shy, solitary and mostly hidden. Even in the best zone many safaris end without one, and some claims of frequent multiple sightings on operator pages are marketing rather than data. Treat a leopard as a bonus and enjoy the deer, birds, elephants and forest scenery along the way.
